Trefoil at Tynwald Day 5 July 2011

Following the North West Region annual meeting in April on the Isle of Man members enjoyed an interesting guided tour of the House of Keys. Quintin Gill extended an open invitation to his group to attend Tynwald Day celebrations. Three members of St Helens Guild were lucky enough to obtain grandstand tickets for this unique ceremony.

This is a very special day for the Manx and a bank holiday when Acts passed during the last session are promulgated. A service is held in the Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist prior to the ceremony on Tynwald Hill. The Queen was represented by the Lieutenant Governor; overseas guests including royalty were invited. A visiting Guard of Honour and the Band of the RAF Regiment, with members and youths from various uniformed organisations lined the pathway between Tynwald Hill and the Royal Chapel.

After the serious ceremonial of Tynwald Day there is a fair with a full programme of events including Manx folk dancing, brass bands, pipe band, dog agility and numerous stalls and entertainment. The Manx Trefoil Guild had a fund raising stall and a chance to do some PR & advertising.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day that was combined with a five day stay exploring the island in lovely sunny weather. Places visited included Rushen Abbey, Cregneish, and other churches involved in the Flower Festival. Sunsets over Peel Castle were magnificent and whilst at Silverdale the ladies had the opportunity to ride on a water powered Victorian carousel!

Region Annual Meeting - April 2011

The weekend of 16 April 2011 saw 20 Members from Guilds on Merseyside travel to the Isle of Man for the Annual Meeting. A warm welcome was extended by the Manx Trefoil Guilds and the weather was bright and sunny.

The speaker was the President of Tynwald Hon. Noel Cringle who referred to the UK not as the mainland, but our adjacent island. He later recited all eight verses of the Manx National Anthem and after the meeting he broke out into song.

The Manx Parliament is the world’s oldest continuous parliament and has been around for over 1,000 years. In the afternoon a tour had been arranged around The House of Keys which was very interesting and gave an insight into the legislative process on the island.

Members made the most of their time on the island, visiting various places of interest and taking in some of the breathtaking scenery, with many looking forward to their next visit. Two ladies even bottle fed new born lambs on the farm where they were staying.

Manchester Ship Canal Cruise

On Saturday 26 June 2010 seventy members and friends from Guilds on Merseyside cruised down the Manchester Ship Canal from Liverpool Pier Head to Salford Quays. The ‘Snowdrop’ was full to capacity with 386 passengers on board.

The weather was glorious and the cruise was so popular that a second ship the ‘Royal Daffodil’ followed closely behind. During the 35 mile journey which took 6 hours, 5 sets of locks were negotiated and swing bridges were manoeuvred bringing traffic to a standstill. Passing under some notable bridges, Runcorn/Widnes bridge, Thelwall Viaduct and a modern lifting bridge gives a completely different view than the one usually seen when travelling by road.

Historic buildings, industry and information on the history of the canal were given by the onboard commentator, with points of interest and wildlife brought to our attention. Merseyside Trefoil Guild was announced as being on aboard and welcomed on their outing to celebrate the Girlguiding Centenary.

On arrival at Salford Quays there was 2 hours free time to visit either The Lowry or Imperial War Museum North, or maybe some retail therapy or just relax in one of the cafes before returning to Liverpool by bus which only took one hour.

A thoroughly enjoyable day and a superb outing to celebrate the centenary.

One World One Beat

On 20 & 21 February members of Girlguiding North West England celebrated World Thinking Day with an arts festival at The Floral Hall, Southport.

The girls participated in various workshops on the theme of world performing arts, including steel band music, African drumming, stage music skills and various forms of dance.

Members from Guilds on Merseyside volunteered to help and were assigned to the merchandising team having first been requested to wear ‘pink & fluffy’ accessories, to draw attention to all the Centenary goods on sale.

It was a very successful weekend and a special way to celebrate the Centenary Thinking Day with the opportunity for girls to learn new skills and enjoy themselves.

Prescot Trefoil Kneeler

Alice Webb and Edna Barr members of Prescot Trefoil Guild have stitched and donated a Centenary kneeler to Prescot Parish Church. This is dedicated to all guides who have paved the way for the future of Guiding.
